Updated: Jul 3, 2023

From the moment you arrive at Hotel Rio Perdido, you’ll completely understand that water is the essence of this very special place.

Rio Perdido — which means “lost river” — is one of TICO TRIPS favorite members of our family of providers. It is located in the heart of a 1,500-acre private canyon reserve. Over thousands of years, the force of its waters had carved the 160 ft deep gorge through this landscape.

This Costa Rican river’s geothermal waters originate from volcanic activity. Hot water flows from the springs into Rio Perdido, creating a completely natural, hot mineral river. It is unlike any other place on the planet.

Water is why we exist, and this property has integrated that notion into every aspect of their experience.

What are Mineral Springs?

Mineral springs are naturally occurring springs that produces hard water, water that contains dissolved minerals. Salts, sulfur compounds, and gases are among the substances that can be dissolved in the spring water during its passage underground. In this they are unlike sweet springs, which produce soft water with no noticeable dissolved gasses. The dissolved minerals may alter the water's taste. Mineral water obtained from mineral springs, and the precipitated salts such as Epsom salt have long been important commercial products.

The water of mineral springs is sometimes claimed to have therapeutic value. Mineral spas are resorts that have developed around mineral springs, where (often wealthy) patrons would repair to 'take the waters' — meaning that they would drink or bathe in the mineral water. Historical mineral springs in Costa Rica have often been outfitted with elaborate stone-works — including artificial pools, retaining walls, colonnades and roofs, to provide a calm, delicate and safe relaxation space.

One of Costa Rica's best Hot Springs hotel

Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province is home to some of the best hot springs in the country. The province is also famous for its active volcanoes, rainforests and other natural attractions. Our favorite spots to relax include Rio Perdido.
